The Australian Bronco Branding Championships were held at Marla, South Australia on the 25th April 2009. A number of Queenslanders made their way to Marla as well as a couple of teams from the Northern Territory. Former champions from SA in Tony Williams and Eddie Nunn along with Mark “Phantom” Spiers also fielded teams. There were also a number of the younger brigade having a go at catching and handled themselves quite capably, with Pete Nunn and Rebecca Bichsel leading in the first round of the doubles for most of the event and eventually going into the final in second place. However it was not to be and they ended up in fourth position which is something they can still be proud of. Mike Fennell placed third in the novice event. these younger catchers are starting to put some pressure on the “oldies”.

Bully Booth from Birdsville Queensland but currently working in SA is the new singles champion for 2009. Runner up was Eddie Nunn from SA, third placing went to Mark “Phantom” Spiers. Gordon Warren (SA), Peter Kleinschmidt (QLD) and Mal Debney (QLD) placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

Alan Fenell from Lambina, Marla, SA (formerly of Qld) teamed up with former Champion Mark “Phantom” Spiers from SA to take out the Doubles title. Peter Kleinschmidt and John Bryant placed second and 2008 title holder Don Rayment placed third. Pete Nunn and Rebecca Bichsel placed fourth with Arnold and Gordon Warren, fifth and the final placing went to the new singles champion in Bully Booth who teamed up with Corey Ferguson.

There were also some brand new contestants who entered the bronco branding competition for the first time having only started to practice about a month before. The new teams came from “Neutral Junction” station which surrounds Barrow Creek in the NT. These teams had never seen bronco branding before, however they certainly tried their heart out and by the end of the day they had certainly learnt some new skills on the ground. The two catchers, John McMasters, the manager and Vincent certainly will be a force to reckon with when their ground crews get up to speed.

The Neutral Junction team won the novice event followed by Shirley MacNamara who travelled down from Mt Isa for the event. The crowd certainly agreed when the Neutral Junction “b” team won the encouragement award.

Best horse went to John Bryant’s Flicka, Bully Booth was best catcher and Shirley MacNamara was best female catcher.

Thanks must also go to judges Vincent and Wayne Williams and timekeepers Emma and Kelly.

The Marla Event also marked the end of the South Australian championship points run. The South Australian Bronco Branding Singles Championship ended in a tie with Bully Booth and Eddie Nunn from Macumba SA who was the previous title holder.
